At Flagstone State School we believe that homework provides students with opportunities to consolidate their classroom learning, pattern behaviour for lifelong learning beyond the classroom and involve family members in their learning. The setting of homework considers the need for students to have a balanced lifestyle. This includes sufficient time for family, recreation, community and cultural pursuits. Homework is effective in supporting learning when it has a clear purpose.
The purpose of homework is to engage students in independent learning to complement work undertaken in class. Homework is most effective when it:
- Consolidates, revises and/or applies student's classroom learning.
- Appropriate to particular years of schooling.
- Varied and differentiated to individual learning needs.
Homework at Flagstone State School

| Students will bring home reading books, sight words and other related activities that involve links between home and school. | 10 minutes

Year 2 - Year 6
| Students in Years 2 to 6 may receive homework in the areas of spelling, mathematics and English. Students may receive activities based on the above three areas, however, the mode that the subjects are presented in will change. | 30 minutes

The Importance of Regular Reading
All students from Prep to Year 6 are encouraged to engage in daily reading, with or by parents and caregivers. Words are essential in building the thought connections in the brain. The more interactive language a child experiences through books and conversation with others (not passively from television and technology access), the more advantaged socially and educationally that child will be for the rest of his or her life.
